Irradiance is the measurement of how much light energy a surface receives from a light source or other kinds of radiation, normally, it is specified in units of W/m² (watts per square meter), some suppliers may also use mw/cm²  as unit.

The more powerful the light source, or closer in proximity the light is, the higher the irradiance.

Why irradiance is important in red light therapy?

Irradiance, wavelength, EFM are important factors when choosing an LED light therapy device.

If irradiance is low, the results and benefits will be much more limited; for example, a red LED Christmas light also emits red light, but its’ irradiance is very low so will not produce any benefits to human body.

Is higher irradiance better in red light therapy?

Yes, higher irradiance is beneficial for most applications,  it allows for deeper cellular penetration.

However, end users should pay attention for sensitive areas like the eyes, lower irradiance or greater distance from the device might be advisable.So most professional manufacturer include us will also provide goggle to client when they need red light therapy panels.

What is the significance of measuring irradiance at a 6 to 8 inch distance?

Measuring irradiance at a 6-8 inch distance provides accurate data reflecting irradiance level the body will actually absorb, ensuring effective therapy as irradiance levels decrease with distance from the source.

What is the recommended irradiance value for red light therapy devices?

l For surface treatments, an irradiance level 25 mW/cm² ~120 mW/cm² is appropriate.

l For deeper cellular penetration, we recommend irradiance level greater than 120 mW/cm².
